As Sarah rolled over to wake up, she was met with a pang of hunger. Yawning, she stretched and looked over at her partner, Ben, who was still fast asleep. He always looked so peaceful when he wasn't awake, often curled up like a child with the blankets up to his chin.
Sarah slowly sat up, her bare torso glistening with sweat from their passionate lovemaking the night before. Her long brown hair fell over her shoulders as she moved to the side of the bed, careful not to wake him. As she stood up, she felt a gentle breeze caress her naked body, sending shivers down her spine.
Walking towards the kitchen in her bare feet, she couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt. She knew that Ben had been looking forward to a special breakfast in bed, but she just couldn't bring herself to pretend to enjoy cooking. With a sigh, she decided to make the most of it and prepared him his favorite meal: scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast with a side of orange juice.
As she laid out his breakfast on the tray, she couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. Even though she couldn't cook for shit, she had managed to make it look presentable. The eggs were slightly runny, the bacon was slightly burnt, and there were some strange lumps in the toast, but overall it looked pretty good.
With a final glance at his sleeping form, she couldn't resist taking a bite of the toast. It tasted slightly odd, but she thought nothing of it. Pushing all of her doubts aside, she gently woke Ben up and presented him with his breakfast.
"Here you go, babe," she said softly, placing the tray on his lap. "I hope you like it."
Ben opened his eyes blearily, still half asleep. "Wow, thank you, baby," he mumbled, kissing her on the cheek. "You didn't have to do this."
Sarah sat down next to him, watching as he took a bite of the eggs. His expression turned into one of confusion as he chewed, and then she saw pure horror as he swallowed. "What is this?" he asked, his voice cracking.
She forced a laugh. "It's just a little something I put together for you. Don't worry, it's edible." She took a bite of the toast, wincing slightly as she felt the lumps in her mouth.
Ben looked at her warily before taking another bite of his eggs. To her surprise, he started to choke. She quickly jumped up and rubbed his back, trying to dislodge whatever was caught in his throat. After a minute or so, he finally managed to clear his throat and take a deep breath.
"Ben, are you okay?" she asked, worriedly touching his shoulder.
He nodded, still looking a little shaken. "Yeah, I'm fine...just a little off my game, I guess." He took another bite of his breakfast, wincing as he chewed.
Sarah couldn't help but feel guilty as she watched him struggle. She knew that she should have just left him to his own devices and let him make his own breakfast, but she had felt like she needed to impress him. "I'm sorry, baby. I messed up big time," she murmured, hugging him tightly.
Ben shook his head. "No, it's okay. I'm just not used to eating like this in the morning." He took another bite of his breakfast, wincing again as he swallowed.
As they finished their meal in silence, Sarah couldn't stop feeling guilty. She knew that she should have just made herself some cereal instead of trying to fake it with cooking. But then again, maybe next time she would just surprise him with a picnic or something else that she could do without burning down the house.
Once they were done, they cleaned up the kitchen swiftly and climbed back into bed, cuddling under the blankets. "That was...interesting," Ben said, trying to laugh it off.
Sarah rested her head on his chest, feeling the warmth of his body through the blankets. "I really am sorry, Ben. I'll make it up to you somehow."
Ben smiled, running his fingers through her hair. "It's okay, babe. You don't have to be sorry. We'll just have to stick to what we're good at, okay?"
Sarah knew exactly what he was talking about. They were great together in bed, but when it came to cooking...it was best to just stick to the basics. Maybe next time they could order delivery or make a trip to the local diner instead of risking another shitty breakfast in bed.
